Kerala lands a Tata shipbuilding JV: the Rs 10,000 crore bet on Cochin Port

Kerala’s state government has facilitated a joint venture between Malabar Cements Ltd and Artson Engineering Limited, a Tata Projects Group company, to set up a new shipbuilding unit at Cochin Port. The venture marks one of the state’s most significant industrial tie-ups in the maritime sector this year.

“All major approvals required for the project have already been secured. Cochin Port Authority has made the necessary land available and has begun preliminary development work,” a government statement said, adding that the project is viewed as a major step toward creating a modern shipbuilding ecosystem in Kerala.

The government said the shipbuilding unit is only part of a much larger investment push. It expects to attract investment potential worth Rs 10,000 crore to the state over the coming years through this project and several others, drawing from both domestic and international investors.

The Malabar Cements-Artson venture falls under Mission Samudra, an integrated maritime development strategy that leverages Kerala’s coastal region, including Vizhinjam International Seaport, Cochin Port and Cochin Shipyard. The mission spans shipbuilding, ship repair, offshore fabrication, marine engineering, coastal manufacturing, logistics and other maritime services.

Discussions are currently under way with several domestic and international investors on related projects, according to the statement, with official announcements expected as each investment proposal reaches its final stage. The government said it remains committed to building a globally competitive maritime manufacturing ecosystem in the state.
