From Goat-Herding In Bihar To 12 World Records: The Sand Artist Story Nobody Saw Coming

Some artists are trained in academies from childhood. Madhurendra Kumar, an internationally acclaimed Indian sand artist and sculptor, started out grazing goats. Born on 5 September 1994 in Barwakala Village, Ghorasahan Block, in the East Champaran district of Bihar — close to the India–Nepal border — he has since built a career that has taken him to more than 25 countries and earned him 12 world records.

Humble Beginnings

His ancestral village is Bijbani, in Bankatwa Block, where his family’s roots remain. He was raised in a farming household that struggled financially: his father, Shivkumar Sah, worked the land, while his mother, Gena Devi, ran the home. To stay in school and later college, his early years included:

• Grazing goats from the age of five
• Selling curd door-to-door
• Weaving bamboo baskets
• Working in hotels and painting houses
• Selling vegetables and snacks at village fairs
• Sleeping in a college corridor for nearly six months because he could not afford a hostel room

A Talent Spotted Early

None of that hardship dulled the instinct that had shown up years earlier. At just three years old, he was already drawing birds and animals in the dirt and on his writing slate. His late grandfather, Ramchandra Sah, watched this and predicted the boy would grow up to become a great artist — a prediction that, decades later, turned out to be accurate.

The Turning Point

In December 2005, in Bathinda, Punjab, he built a monumental sand sculpture titled ‘Sarvadharm Ki Shahadat Dedicated to the Nation,’ working with close to fifty labourers and roughly 200 tons of sand over fifteen days to create a structure nearly 40 feet high and 100 feet long. The piece drew national attention, including praise from India’s former President and scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who told him he believed the world would one day recognise his talent.
