Nintendo’s Game-Key Cards offer a middle ground as gaming goes digital
Nintendo's Game-Key Cards offer a resellable physical option as the gaming industry moves toward digital-only distribution.
As the video game industry moves further toward digital distribution, Nintendo has introduced Game-Key Cards, physical cartridges that function as licence keys rather than storing complete games. The cards still require downloads to play, but unlike standard digital purchases, they can be resold.
The move comes as the industry increasingly follows a timeline late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata outlined during a 2009 investor meeting, where he predicted a gradual, multi-year shift to digital distribution rather than an abrupt one. “In short, in 20 years or so, I might say it will have probably changed,” Iwata said at the time. “But in 5 years or so, I do not totally agree with opinions that no one will purchase titles at retailers by then.”
Sony has reportedly said it will stop producing PlayStation 5 discs starting in 2028, and Rockstar Games announced in 2026 that Grand Theft Auto VI will be digital-only. Xbox has not announced plans to discontinue physical discs, though some recent releases ship with little or no game data stored on the disc, and Microsoft’s rumoured Project Helix hardware may not include a disc drive.
Iwata’s 2009 comments have resurfaced on Reddit after being shared in an earlier Kotaku report, amid renewed discussion about the future of physical games.
