This Wi-Fi fix needs no electricity, no app, and no setup at all

WiPrint, a reflector system developed at Dartmouth College, improves home Wi-Fi coverage entirely passively, with no power source, software or configuration required.

Unlike mesh systems, repeaters or signal boosters, a Wi-Fi improvement system developed at Dartmouth College called WiPrint works entirely passively. Once installed, the reflector requires no electricity, software updates or network configuration, simply reshaping the path of electromagnetic waves the way a satellite dish focuses incoming signals.

The system uses custom-shaped reflectors made from 3D-printed plastic coated with a thin layer of aluminium, each one precisely designed to match the layout of a specific room. Rather than broadcasting evenly in every direction like a typical router, WiPrint redirects radio waves toward areas needing stronger coverage while limiting transmission where it isn’t needed.

Presented at the ACM International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking, the project demonstrated signal strength gains of up to 6 decibels in target locations, reductions of up to 10 decibels in areas where coverage was intentionally minimised, and wireless throughput improvements of as much as 55%, all without increasing the router’s transmission power.

The idea reflects a wider shift in wireless engineering: as homes fill with connected devices, from laptops and smart speakers to security cameras and thermostats, the challenge increasingly isn’t producing stronger signals but managing them more precisely.
