Japanese offices protect after-work hours: no calls, no unpaid overtime, says content creator

A digital creator with 10 years of experience working in Japan says the country's offices strictly protect employees' after-work hours and pay for overtime.

Respect for personal time after work is a defining feature of Japanese office culture, according to digital creator Ankit Purohit, who says he has been working in Japan for the past 10 years. In a social media video, he explains that once employees log out for the day, managers generally do not call them with additional work or expect them to work on their day off, helping create a healthier balance between professional responsibilities and personal life.

Purohit says Japanese companies also generally compensate employees even for short overtime periods: if an employee works just 15 extra minutes beyond scheduled hours, they are paid for that additional time.

The video also touches on punctuality, with employees expected to arrive before their official reporting time rather than exactly at it, and on how status symbols matter little during the daily commute, with even CEOs often travelling to work by train.

Purohit’s video has caught the attention of people on social media, drawn to the emphasis Japanese workplaces place on punctuality, equality and work-life balance.
