The Lucknow police commissionerate has become the first in Uttar Pradesh to deploy AI-based interceptor vehicles, generating 16,347 e-challans in a three-month trial.

The Lucknow police commissionerate has become the first in Uttar Pradesh to put artificial intelligence behind the wheel of traffic enforcement, rolling out AI-based interceptor vehicles that automatically detect speeding and issue e-challans without an officer flagging down a single car.

Officials said the system has been running as a trial for the past three months, and in that window alone it has already generated 16,347 e-challans against motorists caught breaking traffic rules — a volume that would have taken a conventional enforcement team far longer to match.

Each interceptor vehicle carries AI-based speed detection systems, high-resolution cameras, automatic video recording and digital evidence capture, all feeding into an integrated e-challan platform. The moment a vehicle crosses the speed threshold or commits a serious violation, the system captures photographic and video evidence and generates the challan itself, with minimal need for a human to step in.

‘Unlike conventional speed enforcement, the interceptor vehicles are equipped with artificial intelligence-based speed detection systems, high-resolution cameras, automatic video recording, digital evidence capture and an integrated e-challan platform. The system automatically detects speeding and other serious traffic violations, captures photographic and video evidence, and generates digital challans with minimal human intervention, ensuring transparency and reducing the possibility of disputes,’ said DCP traffic Raveena Tyagi.

Beyond plain speeding, officials said the AI-enabled interceptors are also being used to catch reckless driving, stunt-biking and the use of illegal pressure horns — violations that regularly contribute to road accidents on Lucknow’s streets.
